Melford Hall
This turreted red-brick Tudor Mansion was built between 1554 and 1578 by William Cordell, Master of the Rolls to Queen Elizabeth 1. The home of the Hyde Parker family since 1786, Queen Elizabeth 1 was entertained here in 1578. There are beautifully decorated Regency, Georgian and Victorian interiors. The Hall is full of maritime related paintings, fine collections of furniture and porcelain and a collection of Beatrix Potter memorabilia. Beatrix Potter was related to the family and visited regularly between 1900 and 1938.
The garden is laid out in an Edwardian style with some spectacular specimen trees including a Mulberry Tree and a Judas Tree. There is also a Banqueting House in the garden, a rare example of early 17th Century architecture, and a 1 mile circular walk in the Park.
