Thorpeness

Just up from Aldeburgh, lies the small village of Thorpeness. Planned as a seaside resort by Stuart Ogilvie at the beginning of the 20th century, a 65 acre lake known as the Mere was constructed, banked by a country club holiday houses, inn and small shopping centre, all built in a mock-Tudor style. One of its most fantastic creations is "The House in the Clouds", a water tower disguised as a house. Close to the tower is a fine early 19th century windmill.
