Southwold
Southwold is a wonderfully traditional seaside resort nestled along the beautiful Suffolk coastline. Its simplicity in character and traditional nature creates the perfect haven from the demands of a modern society. Many visitors are drawn by the classic resort style and enjoy nothing more than an ice cream along the Pier on a sunny day whilst watching the customary Punch and Judy show. The award winning ENCAMS Blue Flag beaches run alongside rows of the infamous Southwold beach huts, gleaming in the sunshine in their vibrant multicolours. The popularity of Southwold was officially confirmed after the town was voted Britain's most quintessential holiday resort in August 2007, claiming that Southwold is, and always will be, a nostalgic trip into the history of the British seaside.
Southwold is a town steeped in maritime history and boasts a number of museums dedicated to portraying items of local interest. In Victoria Street, Southwold's unique museum is devoted to the history of this corner of Suffolk and houses a collection of paintings and photographs from the town's past. The models, figureheads and sepia prints held at the Sailors Reading Room provide an insight into life for local fishermen in the 1800's.
Southwold's maritime successes relied upon the beacon from the Lighthouse, which was built in 1890 and stands an impressive 101 feet above the town, and was used to warn the fishing boats of the approaching East coast.
