Orford Castle
The little sea-port of Orford, famous for its oysters and smoked fish, is dominated by the massive keep of Orford Castle.
Built in the 12th century, the 90ft high keep is all that remains above ground of the original castle.
Cylindrical within, but multi-sided on the exterior, it is buttressed by three rectangular projecting turrets. The walls of the central tower are almost 10ft thick.
From the top are magnificent views across the River Alde to Orfordness. Beneath, a wooden stairway descends down to the castle dungeons.
